Why You Shouldn’t Ignore Changes in Your Breathing

A recent news story has once again highlighted an important message around lung health: changes in your breathing should not simply be ignored.

Respiratory symptoms often develop gradually.

Perhaps you’re a little more breathless climbing the stairs. A cough is lingering longer than expected. Exercise feels harder than it used to, or you’re experiencing more frequent chest infections.

Over time, it can be easy to accept these changes as normal.

But ongoing changes in your breathing shouldn’t automatically be put down to age, fitness or something you simply have to live with.

Why earlier assessment matters

There are many possible causes of breathlessness, coughing and reduced exercise tolerance, including asthma, COPD, infections, airway inflammation and breathing pattern disorders.

Sometimes, persistent respiratory symptoms can also require further investigation to exclude more serious conditions.

The message isn’t to assume the worst.

It’s to investigate symptoms rather than ignore them.

The earlier a respiratory problem is recognised, the sooner appropriate treatment, further investigation or onward referral can take place.

Lung symptoms are easy to dismiss

It’s common to hear:

"I’m just getting older."

"I’m probably unfit."

"I’ve always had a bit of a cough."

"I used to smoke, so I expect to be breathless."

"It’s probably just anxiety."

Sometimes there may be a straightforward explanation. But persistent or changing symptoms deserve medical attention.

These can include:

  • Persistent or worsening breathlessness
  • A cough lasting several weeks
  • A cough that has changed
  • Recurrent chest infections
  • Wheezing
  • Chest pain when breathing or coughing
  • Coughing up blood
  • Unexplained fatigue or weight loss

These symptoms can have many causes and don’t necessarily indicate a serious condition, but they shouldn’t simply be ignored.

What can a lung health assessment tell you?

At Axis Core Health in Warrington, our respiratory assessments provide objective information about how your lungs are functioning.

Depending on the assessment selected, testing may include:

Spirometry – measures how much air you can breathe out and how quickly you can empty your lungs.

Lung age assessment – compares aspects of your lung function with expected values.

FeNO testing – measures nitric oxide in your breath, providing information about inflammation within the airways.

More comprehensive assessments can also consider your symptoms, medical history and breathing pattern to build a clearer picture of your respiratory health.

Can a lung health check rule out lung cancer?

No.

This is an important distinction.

Spirometry, FeNO and lung age testing cannot diagnose or rule out lung cancer.

Axis Core Health does not currently provide same-day chest X-ray or CT imaging as part of routine lung health screening.

If your symptoms, medical history or clinical assessment indicate that imaging or further investigation may be required, you will be advised about the appropriate next steps.

If you have concerning symptoms, you should seek appropriate medical assessment rather than relying on a routine lung function test for reassurance.

Why have your lungs assessed?

Lung health is about much more than cancer.

You might consider a respiratory assessment if:

  • You’ve become more breathless than you used to be
  • Your exercise tolerance has changed
  • You regularly wheeze or cough
  • You smoke or previously smoked
  • You vape regularly
  • You’ve had occupational exposure to dust or fumes
  • You simply want to better understand your lung function

The purpose isn’t to frighten you or suggest that one test can provide every answer.

It’s about taking changes in your respiratory health seriously and understanding when further investigation may be appropriate.

Don’t wait until breathing becomes difficult

We routinely think about our blood pressure, cholesterol, weight and heart health, yet many of us rarely think about our lungs until something changes.

If you’ve noticed persistent changes in your breathing, don’t automatically assume it’s age, fitness or anxiety.

Get it assessed. Get the right information. And, where necessary, take the next step.

At Axis Core Health in Warrington, we provide lung function testing and consultant-led respiratory assessments to help you better understand your respiratory health.

Breathe better. Screen earlier. Act sooner.
